After Oscar slap, Apple TV+ reportedly holding director Antoine Fuqua's release until next year

Oscar for a decade, Will Smith is still considered personalityless in Hollywood. After Chris Rock was attacked over an inappropriate joke he made against his wife Jada Pinkett Smith, several of Smith's future projects appeared to be in flux. Now, the film which was scheduled for his award-season follow-up is reportedly being pushed to next year.

Emancipation, an action-drama starring Smith as Peter, a man who escapes slavery in a Louisiana swamp, has been delayed from its expected fall 2022 release date to sometime in 2023, reports Variety. . Directed by Antoine Fuqua, the film was expected to be a frequent award contender for both Smith, who won Best Actor for King Richard, and distributor Apple, warmed by his best-picture win for CODA. Was. An anonymous filmmaker told Variety that when he saw footage of the project before Thappad, he predicted that "Wills is going to win [the Oscar]."

An official release date was not announced, but a source told Variety that "it is an untold truth" that Mukti will be dropped from the 2022 schedule. The insider said that as talks between Apple execs and filmmakers continue to decline, "it seems highly improbable." Elsewhere on Smith's IMDB, Bad Boys 4 and Netflix's Fast and Lose are both reportedly on hiatus; Netflix reportedly also canceled a sequel to 2017's Bright, though it's reportedly unclear if the decision was made because of the Oscar slap.

Smith has maintained a low profile since the incident. Last month, he was spotted in India and a source told Entertainment Tonight that he is "going for therapy after the Oscars incident." He has yet to publicly address the scandal, but will appear on this season of David Letterman's My Next Guest Needs No Introduction, which premieres May 20 on Netflix. However, Smith's interview was reportedly filmed ahead of the Oscars.
